Time to head back home. It was a long day.
I was on the road by 6AM and had breakfast at my favorite breakfast place in the universe: Waffle House. There's one in Mooresville, NC on Route 150 near the I-77. They had a $5 special that included a waffle, 2 eggs (any style), and a beverage. I added sausage to the mix and breakfast came in at just under $10 USD. It was good of course, but one doesn't go to Waffle House for the food, it's the experience.
Overall, it was a smooth trip back despite there being heavy rain and icing conditions in the Northeast. I had spoken with Al, Vinnie, and Rich and all of them advised me of what was happening weather-wise. The weather on my route was just dandy: it was dry and not nearly as cold for much of the trip. It became overcast in the DC area and there was misty rain in MD.
Unfortunately, I had gotten pulled over early on in VA, once I had gotten onto the I-81. The cop told me that he pulled me over for not moving into the left lane as I passed him (he had pulled someone else over and had his lights flashing). He was very condescending and returned with the summons. I asked him to explain what I had done again, because I didn't understand what the issue was. He rolled his eyes and said that according to Virginia State Law, that if there is an emergency vehicle with the lights flashing in the shoulder, you are required to pull into the left lane, to be further away.
The cop further said that he cut me a break by citing me for not obeying a traffic sign and that if he had charged me with what I apparently failed to do, it would have been a more severe fine. The summons as written is $91 USD.
It took me awhile to piece it together, but I can understand why they have that law in place. I let it bother me for about an hour, and I got better with it and if anything, there's a lesson learned. Moreover, it took a lot to not have a knee-jerk attitude toward the cop (although I understand why there are those who dislike law enforcement personnel).
The rest of the trip was uneventful. I got to Al's shortly before 5pm. We had dinner at Red Lobster and caught the ending of the NFC championship game (Seattle ultimately prevailed over Green Bay). I headed back to Avon and was home by 8.
Day off on Monday. I'm going to miss that BMW.
