Friday Five - 20171208

Ahh…end of another fun-filled week at the office and it’s time for a first-time “Friday Five” post. Seriously, though there is much madness going on in the country, I’ve had a pretty good week…

The New iPhones
Our iPhone Xs were finally delivered on Monday! Though it does seem a bit Pavlovian to be excited over a new smartphone, Al’s been in need of a new one for awhile now. The batteries on his 6 have been having a fairly low timespan after a charge and his speaker was barely loud enough for him to hear it; he’s not big on holding the phone to his head (for that matter, neither am I).

First impressions: the size is actually very ideal. It’s not too big, not too small. The screen resolution is very nice. There is a learning curve and getting used to the absence of the Home button has proven a bit of a challenge at first, but the swiping movements to get around feel a bit more natural, especially when having the phone docked on my iHome clock radio at the office.

Al is doing okay with the changes since having it for a couple of days, and he loves his new phone. That’s nice to see…lol.

The “Moore-Ons”
The AL Senate vote will be taking place on Tuesday, the 12th. Despite the inappropriate sexual allegations of Roy Moore’s sordid past, it is shaping up that he will win the US Senate seat. Trump has doubled-down on his support of Moore (birds of a feather, you know…), and if I were a betting man, I’d bet my last ten bucks that Moore will win this Tuesday. Alabamians are deep red, and they’d sooner vote for a pedophile before a Democrat. Then again, they’re not the brightest bulbs in the chandelier…hmm.

Training
Ahh, one of my favorite things to write about. Seriously, it’s going okay and I felt better this week. The tweak in my lower back appears to have subsided and I was able to get a decent leg workout done last night. My Training Room workouts have been going quite well also. Because of having to head to Al’s on Wednesday evening and needing to pick up my race packet for tomorrow’s Santa Run, I had to do two early (5:15AM) shifts. It’s not a problem necessarily, except around the middle-of-the-day, I struggle to remain bright-eyed-and-bushy-tailed. The tendonitis in my right elbow hasn’t subsided much, but that would mean laying off my bicep exercises, which ain’t gonna happen. I want those gainz, ya know!!

Santa Run & Tomorrow’s Weather
Tomorrow’s impending snow forecasts have me a little on edge because I am running in my first Santa Run in the latter part of the morning. And Al and I are planning to head into NYC to do our yearly Holiday-in-NYC-Thing. The latter event might prove to be enjoyable, since we’re now in the winter holiday season and that will be a nice backdrop. I’m not sure if the run will happen or not at this point; I hope to learn more when I pick up the race packet after work today. If the race doesn’t happen, or if things look to risky, I’ll do a run over at Jersey Shore on one of the treadmills. A run will happen…oh yes…it is known.

2nd Friday “Drinks”
Meeting with the guys tonight around 11 for drinks at Applebee’s.

Weather Closure

We got the notification last night that the State would be closed today, so another day off...yay!  All told, a short week between MLK day and closures midday Tuesday and today.  The major arteries were cleared today, so it looks like tomorrow will see me back at work. The day wound up being quite productive. We lucked out again with the way the snow came in; the snow didn't accumulate around our property with the exception of the backyard, which meant very little shoveling.  The only shoveling that had to be done was to dig out the cars, which between the two of them took 25 minutes. Hit the gym for the 9am class.  Today's workout was a challenge conditioning circuit.  There were two, 10-minute circuits.  I got through the workout okay, though I need to roll my upper back out tomorrow.  It may be time to order one of those rollers from Perform Better. Hung out at home for a bit, showered, and watched Let's Make A Deal and The Price is Right ...

The Avon Pavilion Stays!

There was some good news in the goings-on about the Avon Pavilion and the business owners who rented the space: the town is renewing their lease for the next 10 years.  The town had originally voided their lease in January once the structures were demolished from the damage from Sandy.  The tenants had an agreement and threatened to file a lawsuit against the Borough if they didn't reconsider.  Well, the town blinked, and the previous tenants have their lease renewed. It didn't make any sense that the town would withdraw their lease in the first place.  They are good tenants, and by the far, the best ones who ever occupied the space (that I'm aware of).  They converted the place into a nice restaurant, and kept it well-maintained, clean, and made it very successful.  If you have a good tenant, why not try to hold onto them? And now the big question:  Why the requirement for an additional 200 square feet of bathroom space?? Here's the article fr...

9th & Ocean

It was a sense of the familiar with a side of strangeness.  Nearly four months after Hurricane Sandy had done her cooch dance around these parts, we finally were able to walk along Ocean Avenue in Belmar this afternoon.  The town advertised specific businesses that were open along the thoroughfare.  I had driven to Ocean Avenue the other day, but the barricades were up prohibiting pedestrian and vehicle traffic.  Al wanted to check things out. We walked down 8th Avenue toward the beach, and saw folks walking and jogging along Ocean Avenue. We assumed it was okay to walk along the beachfront, and proceeded to walk south. A police van was constantly patrolling the area, basically making sure that everyone stayed on the western side of the street and on the sidewalk.  We walked down to the south end and back.  In a nutshell, there was a lot of cosmetic damage to many of the homes and businesses.  One home had some major structural damage, and an overh...
